“Over the course of the millennia, all these ancestors in your tree, generation upon generation, have come down to this moment in time—to give birth to you. There has never been, nor will ever be, another like you. You have been given a tremendous responsibility. You carry the hopes and dreams of all those who have gone before. Hopes and dreams for a better world. What will you do with your time on this Earth? How will you contribute to the ongoing story of humankind?” ~ Laurence Overmire

Nathaniel Hawthorne Keitt, Sr.

The family of Kitts (Keitt) was founded in this country by George Kitts, who came to South Carolina via Bermuda in 1761 under the patronage of George III of England. Due to his having received land grants from the Royal House of England, he did not participate in the American War for Independence. He settled on Congaree Creek, below Columbia. His daughter, who had come from England with him, married a member of the Gates family. Apparently George Kitts was a widower when he came to America and later married again, his second wife being Dorothy Barton Whetstone. By this marriage he had five children: Adam, William, George, Mary Anne, and Margaret. The three Kitts brothers changed the name to Keitt in 1812 at the suggestion of William, who liked the sound better. George Kitts died in 1799.

My Connection:
My  paternal grandfather,Nathaniel Hawthorne Keitt was born March 05, 1905, in Bowman, Orangeburg County, South Carolina to Willie and Viola Keitt.
He was raised by his grandparents Joshua and Elizabeth Keitt.  He was found in the census with his grandparents as early as 1910 where he was five years old along with his brother Romeo Keitt (b.1900) who was ten years old.

At this time I have no knowledge what happened to his parents.

Nathaniel's first wife was name Rebecca, who was 18 in the 1930 census, when he married my grandmother 2 years later (1932) his first wife was deceased.  Nathaniel and Irene had three children, Ilee, Nathaniel,Jr., and Vincent(my dad)
